2nd Lieutenant Leslie William Charles Pearce was born in July 1899 and entered the Royal Flying Corps as a Cadet in July 1917. Advanced to 2nd Lieutenant in November 1917, he joined No. 218 Squadron as a Pilot in the Summer of 1918, and had carried out nearly 20 operations against such targets as Ostende, Zeebrugge and Bruges, before being posted missing on 31.7.1918 - Pearce had also been credited with one victory during a Zeebrugge run on 4.7.1918 (AIR 20043 refers). Subsequently interned in Holland, he was repatriated in November 1918 and placed on the Unemployed List in late 1919.
