Lot Essay

Sergeant George Frederick Pemberton was born in St. James's, London and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade in India in August 1863, aged 25 years, having seen earlier service in the Bengal Horse Artillery. Gaining steady promotion, he transferred to the 4th Battalion as a Sergeant in August 1877, served in the Second Afghan War and returned home in May 1884. He was discharged in the following month as a result of being medically unfit for further service.
