A signed version with some differences to the figures and boats was offered at Christie's, New York, 12 January 1994, lot 123. A replica of the left side of the present painting was sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, 10 November 1992, lot 178.

The Trekschuit ferry to Leyden was towed along the river, providing a regular service. The occupants of the Trekschuit in the present picture were previously thought to be Prince William of Orange and his entourage.
