Lot Essay

Charles de Marguetel de Saint-Evremond (d. 1703) was a French writer and wit. He was born in St. Denis le Gaust near Coutances and fought loyally for his country at Rocroi, Freiburg, Nordlingen and the Fronde until 1661. On the discovery of his humourous letter to Crequi on the Peace of the Pyrenees, he fled to London where he was warmly received by the Court of Charles II. He remained in London for the majority of his days delighting society with his wit.
Saint-Evremond published his satire La Comedie in 1644.

The shell masks and oysters in the painted cartouche are taken from 'Description de la Grotte de Versailles', A. Felibien, 1672.
