Lot Essay

The Chinese chest displays a landscape of waterside pavilions within a flowered frame, and relates to early 18th century screens such as that illustrated in A. Setterwall, The Chinese Pavilion at Drottningholm, Stockholm, 1972, p. 140. A dome-lidded chest, decorated with a similar landscape and bearing the armorials of Sir Robert Child (d. 1721), may have been commissioned around 1715 on his election as Chairman of the Honourable East India Company (sold anonymously, Christie's London, 3 July 1997, lot 16).
