The benedictory kufic inscription contains the words: wa baraka wa sa'da wa yumn.
This jug is of unusually high quality, being reminiscent in form and technique with the remarkable figural jug sold in these Rooms 23 April 1996, lot 152. The incised design on the underside of the foot is probably a potter's mark. Such marks, usually in a glaze or underglaze colour, are occasionally found and are usually, as here and on lot 245, simple designs rather than writing.
