The Birth of the Infante Philip, Duke of Calabria, a fan, painted with Queen Marie Amalia of Saxony in bed in the Palace of Portici, near Naples, with crimson canopy with Royal arms above, and a lace coverlet, she is attended by six ladies, two carrying fans, and the Duchess Miranda Caracciolo who holds the baby Prince who already bears the order of the Golden Fleece, beside the bed stands her husband King Charles III of the Two Sicilies, later to be King Charles III of Spain, and his brother the Duke of Parma, the dressing table mirror, the clock the three mirrors and the overdoor are all crowned, the verso is painted with allegories of the four continents with children of the four continents dancing and waving blue banners inscribed PR and PP, the Spanish scenes has a country palace in the background, the Chinese scene a pagoda, the ivory sticks carved, pierced, silvered and gilt with figures and flowers, the fore-edges carved with birds and pots of flowers, the handle with a flower when closed -11.5in. (28cm.), probably 1747
