One side stained red, the opposing side natural, the white side royal pieces carved with European facial features and coronation regalia, the king with top hat, the stained side royal pieces carved as emperor and empress

COMPARATIVE LITERATURE
Colleen Schafroth,Sculptures in Miniature, Maryhill Museum of Art, 1990, page 34. During the 19th century, the heads of Carlos I of Portugal and his queen, Marie Amelia, were frequently represented. The Portuguese had been a dominate force since 1586 and leased the port until 1859 from the Chinese, when it was annexed. By 1887 it was fully recognised as a Portuguese colony. A similar lot was sold in these Rooms, 17 December 1997, lot 19.
