A design for a figure of America was made by Jean Simon Deverberie (1764-1824) during the Directoire period. This style was to become known as the pendules au bon sauvage or style Deverberie. Between 1795 and 1815 several different designs were made in this genre. It's popularity reflected the increased interest in Europe for all things exotic. People came to view these little known "savages" as peoples who were good at heart and lived close to nature. These views were influenced by the literature of the day - for example Jean-Jacques Rousseau - and travel journals. This particular model shows many similarities with the pendule à l'Afrique. They are differentiated by their attributes. The attributes that identify America are the stylised alligator which refers to the Rio de la Plata in South America and the palm tree. A design which Deverberie executed in 1799 can be found in H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, 1986, vol. I, p. 381, fig. 5.15.28.
