Lot Essay

This model of candlestick, traditionally attributed to Juste-Aurèle Meissonier (1693-1750), is closely related to a pair in the Wrightsman Collection (F.J.B. Watson, The Wrightsman Collection, New York, 1966, vol. II, p. 333, no. 64) and a further pair attributed to Antoine-Sébastien Slodtz (1695-1754) in the Wallace Collection (F.J.B. Watson, Wallace Collection Catalogues, London, 1956, F.76).

A pair of candlesticks attributed to Slodtz was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 21 May 1996, lot 318, and a further pair by Christie's Monaco, 28 February 1992, lot 42.
