AN ANTWERP ORMOLU-MOUNTED TORTOISESHELL, EBONY AND ROSEWOOD CABINET-ON-STAND
Late 17th Century
The rectangular top with pierced baluster gallery above an overhanging moulded cornice and an architectural front with two columns of five drawers, each drawer decorated with a cabochon centre flanked by foliage, the two columns centred by a frieze-drawer with a simulated pediment with cornucopia and scallop-shells centered by a conforming cabochon and above two doors simulated as two conforming panels flanked by three pilasters, enclosing a fitted architectural interior with a chequer floor and glazed angled sides with pierced foliate mounts, above a long drawer and flanked by four short drawers to each side, above a further long drawer and the ebonised stand with a central pull-out writing-slide with concentric rectangular panels, the shaped frieze on turned baluster legs joined by a box stretcher and headed by a cabochon, on bun feet, previously with further mounts to the top drawer, the associated stand and gallery adapted in the early 19th Century in England, restorations, the cabinet inscribed to the reverse in red 'L826A'
