A LILLE MYTHOLOGICAL TAPESTRY
Late 17th Century
Woven in wools and silks, depicting to the centre a Satyr pursuing a Nymph, by a fountain depciting Samson holding a column on a Sphinx support, within a wooded floral landscape with a French garden in the distance and a palace amongst the trees, the borders with a trellis-pattern and wreathed with flowers and fruits and within a yellow outer border, reduced in height at the top, later brown outer slip to either side, reweaving a patching

Lot Essay

The loosely garlanded borders and the setting of the scene in a predominantly verdure subject is indicative of the Lille tapestry manufactory. A related tapestry depicting Bacchante dancing and playing tambourines was sold anonymously, Sotheby's New York, 13 January 1995, lot 1210.
