Seated on a rock, naked but for drapery over one thigh, a small snake feeding from a shell held in her extended hand, on a naturalistically-carved base inscribed I. KOPF/ROMA/1866; on associated cream-painted circular fluted wooden pedestal
The figure: 37 in. (94 cm.) high; 16 in. (40.5 cm.) square at base
The pedestal: 43 in. (109.2 cm.) high

Lot Essay

Born in Würtemburg, Josef von Köpf, largely a self-taught sculptor, worked with Martin Wagner in Würzburg during the 1850s, before spending a period of time in Rome and later settling in Baden-Baden. His work included busts and statues of German royalty and allegorical figures such as Piety, The Dance, Music and Summer. A figure by von Köpf emblematic of Winter was sold in these rooms 27 February, 1997, lot 293.
