Lot Essay

Two boys examine an exciting find of flotsam on a beach within a harbour. Out to sea a three-masted ship sails at a precarious angle in a windy Galway bay. In 1924 Yeats painted over twenty small panels of scenes, some in Dublin but mostly in the West of Ireland, stretching from Tralee in Co. Kerry up the coast as far as his native Co. Sligo. They were usually of coastal landscapes but when they included figures these are relaxed and settled, fitting happily into a reborn country, in only the third year of the Irish Free State.
