Ida Nettleship was the daughter of the animal painter, John Trivett Nettleship. She went to the Slade in 1892 and won a three year scholarship in 1895. It was here that she met Orpen and the painter Augustus John whom she married in 1901. She died of puerperal fever in 1907 after bearing him five sons.
