Lot Essay

This poster advertised Lautrec's album of 11 lithographs inspired from his experiences at the 'maisons closes' of rue Joubert, rue d'Amoise and the rue des Moulins in Paris. Throughout 1892-1895 he spent weeks at a time living with the women who inhabited these houses and the 'Elles' series depicts the prostitutes carrying out their daily 'off duty' routines.
