A finely engineered late 19th-Century single cylinder mill engine with white metal plate engraved James Carlaw 1879 Glasgow
with mahogany-lagged brass-bound cylinder 13/8in. bore x 2in. stroke, over-mounted centrally positioned valve chest, separate steamways, pedestal mounted bar-type crosshead guides with top and bottom webs and oil pots, barrelled connecting rod with wedged and cottered big and little ends, faceted crank, barrelled eccentric and valve actuating rods, horizontally mounted rope driven shaft governor, spoked flywheel and V belt pulley, the crankshaft running in curved trunnions, finished in anodised brass and polished brightwork and mounted on a walnut display base -- 6½ x 133/8in. (16.5 x 34cm.)
