Lot Essay

This derives from the painting on copper, 47.6 x 66 cm, in the Royal Collection, Hampton Court (K. Ertz, Jan Breughel der Jüngere, 1984, p.44 & pp.277/8, cat.no.96, plate 96). As Ertz, op. cit., p.278, points out, it must have been inspired by the painting of circa 1615 by Jan Breughel I, now in the Galleria Doria-Pamphilj, Rome (K. Ertz, Jan Breughel der Ältere, 1979, p.244, cat.no.291, fig.314).
