Lot Essay
This model of clock follows almost identically a drawing attributed by C. Baulez to the bronzier François Rémond (maître in 1774), illustrated in H. Ottomeyer/P. Pröschel et.al, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. 1, p.295, pl. 4.17.5. A number of examples of this clock exist and there are variations to the models including the reading figures being in biscuit porcelain or ormolu, in addition to the patinated bronze found on this example. A clock of this exact model but with the reading figures cast in ormolu is illustrated in op.cit., p. 295, pl. 4.17.6. Other examples of this model are in the collection of H.M. the Queen, the Château of Versailles and Castle Stockholm (See op.cit, p. 295).
