Lot Essay

The representation of two bound prisoners under the soles of the dead person's sandals is part of a tradition dating back to the New Kingdom. They represent here the traditional enemies of Egypt, a Nubian and an Asiatic, painted with brown and pink skin respectively, cf., S. D'Auria (et al.), Mummies and Magic, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, 1988, p. 208, fig. 157, for similar and further details on the iconography.
