A 64-Bore Sardinian Miquelet-Lock Fowling-Piece
Signed Maorio(?), dated 1847
With tapering russet barrel octagonal over most of its length and chiselled in low relief at the breech with flowers and foliage and a cross, all heightened with inlaid brass, and with scrollwork on the underside of the muzzle, signed lock engraved with scrollwork on a hatched ground, three-quarter stock almost entirely encased in steel panels, those on the butt pierced and engraved with interlaced scrollwork, foliage, and flower-heads set with small corals (many missing), those on the fore-stock cut in low relief with similar ornament inhabited by masks, fabulous beasts, and human figures and engraved 'Giovani' and 'G.G.C.G. 1847', deeply engraved brass-inlaid trigger-guard, and iron ramrod with notched baluster tip (some pitting and surface rust, tip of fore-stock probably removed during the gun's working life)
