A Rare 6-Bore Turkish Matchlock Gun
17th Century
With four-stage twist barrel inlaid with gold and with gold-lined mark containing the inscription 'Made by Waly' in Arabic, pronounced muzzle bearing a slotted brass fore-sight, and standing single-aperture back-sight, Circassian walnut full stock with fluted fore-end and characteristic faceted butt, inlaid with shaped ivory panels and with brass pellets and roundels enclosing small horn inlays in geometric patterns, the area behind the barrel covered with silver sheet, ivory butt-plate also inlaid with brass roundels (some missing, mainly on the underside), brass pricker in a silver sleeve below the pan, and wooden ramrod with long moulded and faceted iron tip (stock with some defects, some inlay missing, some replaced, trigger apparently an old working replacement)

This is a rare example of an original Turkish matchlock, of the type captured at the relief of the siege of Vienna in 1683 - most of them were broken up, and the barrels only saved for remounting
