With tapering sighted barrel in three stages separated by mouldings, the forward section (old repair) with sighting flat, the breech section octagonal changing to polygonal, plain tang, signed rounded lock with engraved moulded border and chiselled details on the cock and steel, moulded figured Grenoble walnut full stock carved in relief with scrolls at the rear ramrod-pipe and with raised apron at the barrel tang (fore-end chipped and repaired in several places, tip replaced), iron mounts including pierced scrolled side-plate chiselled with foliage, the butt-plate engraved 'No 49' and with long waved tang, four turned ramrod-pipes, and later horn-tipped ramrod

Lot Essay

Claude Chasteau (recorded 1675-1727), gunmaker to King Louis XIV, was among the most important Parisian makers, and is represented by a superb garniture in the Tøjhusmuseet, Copenhagen (inv. nos. B 960-1), and a magnificent fowling-piece in the Hofjagd- und Leibrüstkammer, Vienna (inv. no. WS. A 1759)
