With tapering barrels retaining almost all their original blued finish and with concave rib on the upper side only, silver fore-sight, gold-lined touch-holes, border engraved grooved tang overlapping the rear of the breeches, signed border engraved flat bevelled locks each with stepped tail engraved with a scene of the chase, and blued screws, top jaws and steel-springs, moulded finely figured walnut half-stock carved in relief with symmetrical strapwork and foliage at the barrel tang and behind the rear ramrod-pipe, engraved brass mounts, the butt plate engraved 'N. 65', pierced silver escutcheon with lion supporters, coronet above and grotesque mask beneath, blued triggers and trigger-plate, and original iron-capped ramrod, in exceptional original condition throughout

Lot Essay

Presumably made by the patriarch of the Penel gunmaking dynasty of St. Etienne, this is a very early example of a side-by-side gun with soldered barrels, the rarer for remaining in almost unfired condition
