An Unusual Pair Of 30-Bore Brescian Flintlock Pistols With English Locks By John Shaw
Circa 1650, the locks circa 1690
With two-stage barrels with a moulded ring at each muzzle, the breech sections each with four raised longitudinal ribs, stepped ramp at the rear, and respectively stamped with signature 'Lazarino Cominazzo' and 'Lazarino Cominiazzo', plain tangs, shaped rounded locks (replacing the original wheel-lock mechanisms) each finely engraved with a demi-figure, strawberry foliage, a bird, an insect, and a monster-head and each signed 'I. Shaw', finely figured walnut full stocks (some cracks and repairs) inlaid with steel panels finely pierced and engraved with scrollwork, flowers, and foliage, pommels en suite, pierced and chiselled trigger-guards each with waved tang, long pierced single ramrod-pipes, and original iron-tipped wooden ramrods each with worm (some wear, belt hooks removed)

John 2 Shaw (d. 1720) was one of the most distinguished London gunmakers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He was apprenticed in Bristol, but already working in London, 1665-8. Free of the Gunmakers' Company in 1673, he was successively Gunmaker-in-Ordinary to Kings Charles II, William III, and George I
