A WILLIAM AND MARY WALNUT, BURR-WALNUT AND FRUITWOOD MARQUETRY BUREAU-CABINET
Anglo-Dutch, circa 1695
In three sections, the double-arched heavily molded overhanging cornice with turned vasiform finials to each corner and to the center, above conforming doors with mirrored shaped panels with cushion-molded surrounds, the reverse of each door inlaid with flower-filled urns and birds, enclosing a walnut veneered interior with a range of pigeon holes and drawers with flanking inlaid columns with gilt-metal Corinthian capitals to a pair of center-opening doors enclosing a further arrangement of pigeon holes, secret compartments and drawers, above two candle slides and a feather-banded slant-front inlaid with an elaborate urn issuing scrolling flower-laden vines opening to reveal a range of pigeon holes over concave-fronted short drawers and flanking stepped deep drawers, behind a well with slide cover inlaid with shell and flower clasps, the lower section with two feather-banded short over two long drawers, on bun feet, inlaid overall to the inside of top two sections and outside with flowering vines, birds and floral clasps, the sides inlaid with harpies and elaborate scrolling vines and flower-filled vases, the lock plates all engraved with interlocking diamond and quatrefoil foliate motifs, each section with cockbeaded surrounds, with the partial paper label inscribed in black ink This 'Queen Anne Secretaire Cabinet' was...by/Moger.../at...Mor/in...Du(?)..., the bun feet probably replaced
