RARE COMPLETE SET OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS HISTORY OF THE MOST IMPORTANT 19TH-CENTURY SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION TO THE INTERIOR OF SOUTH AMERICA. The work includes over 100 maps and nearly 400 plates, including a fine series of natural history plates by Paul Oudart 'one of the outstanding French illustrators and bird painters' (Jackson Dictionary p.382). 'Castlenau and his party sailed to Rio de Janeiro on board the French war brig "Dupetit-Thouars," and began his meteorological, magnetic, botanical, and zoological observations there. The expedition resolved to cross South America from Rio via Minas Geraes, Goias, and Mato Grosso. They explored the north of Mato Grosso, the River Paraguay as far as Ascunción, and from the Vila Bela they travelled to Bolivia through Potosi, finally reaching La Paz. From there they journeyed to Lima, where they spent some time, then proceeded to the source of the Amazon from whence they sailed to Pará. Owing to the death of a member, d'Osery, who was killed by Indians, a large part of the records were lost, among them a diary of the voyage, the register of the astronomical and barometrical observations, and the albums of drawings and natural history notes. However, the minutes were saved, which made the writing of the history of this expedition possible...' (Borba de Moraes p.168). Despite the losses, the scientific results of the expedition were of considerable importance. Besides the zoological, botanical, mineralogical and ethnographical collections he brought back to Europe, Castelnau provided a large amount of information with the astronomical, barometrical, hydrographical and hydraulic observations and determinations he made.
