Mark Catesby (1682-1749)
Piscium Serpentum Insectorum aliorumque nonnullorum animalium nec non plantarum quarundam imagines quas... Catesby in posteriore parte... illius operis... descripsit, additis vero imaginibus piscium... Nuremberg: Paul Jonathan Felsecker, 1777. 2° (470 x 314mm). Title in Latin and German, 2pp. preface in Latin and German in two columns, parallel texts in two columns in Latin and German, 2pp. German index, 6pp. Latin index. 109 engraved plates, 108 hand-coloured, one folding, all after Catesby and Georg Dionysius Ehret. (Plate XL uncoloured, plate LXI, folded with 70mm. tear at inner margin, occasional old folds to some plates and text prior to plate LXXII.) Contemporary German half sheep, vellum spine label (some light scuffing, small splits to hinges).
SECOND ISSUE OF THE FIRST GERMAN EDITION, WITH THE ADDITIONAL PLATES AND TEXT. A careful comparison of the present work and the first issue of the first German edition has revealed a probable publishing sequence. (For details of this see lot 14). The creasing displayed in the present copy to some of the early plates and text suggest, that unused stock from the earlier issue was employed in some of the later issue copies. Cf. Hunt 486 (109 plates); cf. Nissen BBI 337 (109 plates); cf. Nissen ZBI (32-84 plates); Sabin 11515 (72 plates).
