William Thomas Greene
Parrots in Captivity ... with notes on several species by F.G. Dutton. London: George Bell, 1884-1887-[88]. Volumes I-III and supplement in one, large 8° (244 x 163mm). 89 (of 90) coloured xylographic plates by B. Fawcett and Driffield after F. Lydon finished by hand. (Lacking one of the plates and all text after p. 36 of the supplement, three plates slightly damaged at lower margin, one with laminated repair, occasional mainly light spotting and thumb-soiling.) Contemporary green half calf preserving one [?] original pictorial wrapper at front, red speckled edges.
This copy includes 8 of the 9 plates in the very rare supplement or unfinished fourth volume, and also preserves a coloured wrapper showing the unrecorded Stanley Parakeet. The first two volumes were issued in 18 parts, of which parts 1-6 appeared in 1883, the remainder in 1884. Volume III apppeared entire in 1887. Zimmer observes that 'a fourth volume, which I have not seen, was begun in 1888 and carried through 2 parts with 9 coloured plates and corresponding text.' Of the 8 plates in this copy, 3 are bound in as frontispieces to volumes I-III without the corresponding text. The plate of the 'Malaccan or long-tailed Parrakeet' is lacking, although the text to this and 5 other plates is present. Nissen IVB 393; Wood p. 368; Zimmer p. 274.
