Unusually and crisply formed as a stylised lotus bud, the flat top with a lobed border around a recessed central compartment, the sides of the cover and deeper base each relief-moulded and lacquered with confronted lotus petals, all standing on a shallow lobed foot, the external lacquer principally black, the base and fitted internal plain circular deep tray red lacquered, old wear

A smaller box of the same shape in the Avery Brundage Collection, San Francisco is illustrated by Hai-Wai Yi-Chen, Chinese Art in Overseas Collections, Lacquerware, pl.53. It is interesting to note that the wire inlay seems to consist of pewter wires, which is also found on the black lacquer box of similar size and shape in the Royal Ontario Museum, and another comparable example is in the Cleveland Museum of Art
