This chair was designed as model No. 13, first appearing in the Thonet sale catalogue in 1859 and is one of the earliest examples of chairs made of solid bentwood, rather than laminated wood. The model was shown at the London World Exhibition in 1862, the second Paris World Exhibition in 1867 and the Vienna World Fair in 1873, where the chair was exhibited with a circular stretcher for the first time.
The elaborate gesso and gilding on the present chair indicates that the piece was probably executed for a special commission.
