BOOKS FROM WYATT'S LIBRARY WITH A LETTER FROM HIS WIFE

Autograph letter signed ("Josephine Earp") to Stuart Lake, Oakland California, November 19, 1935. 3 pages, octavo, some light creasing else very fine.
The widow Josephine has mounting debts and writes Mr. lake offering to sell him a 29 volume set of Hubert Howe Bancroft's works from Wyatt's library. "By this letter you can see that I'm visiting my sister in Oakland who has just sold her home and as I had my things stored at her place I am here packing my things ... I found the Bancroft Works, twenty nine volumes in all which when you called upon me ... you expressed a wish you would like to have ... Should you desire to have them you can direct me how to send them to you ... Much as I would like to present the books as a gift .. I am so very short I cannot do so but will place no price on same ..." Included is a letter that Mr. Lake's books were eventually dispersed by Dawsons, and also a copy of an excerpt from Suppressed Murder of Wyatt Earp by Boyer, p. 52: "Two of the Bancroft Books from Wyatt's set were advertised by the Dawson Bookstore in Los Angeles in 1965 from Stuart Lake's library -- Lake's daughter informed me in a letter that her father had bought a Bancroft from Wyatt's widow."
Provenance: Ronald J. Atlas collection. (3)
