GARRETT, Patrick Floyd (1850-1908).
Lawman, rancher, Texas Ranger.
Autograph letter signed ("Pat Garrett"), to "Friend ...", Las Cruses, New Mexico, on stationery imprinted "Office of the Sheriff of Dona Ana County P. F. Garrett, Sheriff." 1 page, quarto, very mild foxing. The letter is enclosed in a 1/4 red morocco custom case.
Garret has apparently let a friend stay at his place while away and discovered he has sublet it to someone he finds objectionable. "... tells me you sublet my place to Samsom. I object to you doing so and think I have a right to do so if I had wanted Samsom on the place I would have rented to him he has imposed on me ever since I left there Heart-beating Water Bull service. If you don 't get him away from there I will ask you to surrender the place to me. yours Truly P.F. Garrett".
Pat Garrett is probably most famous for the fact that he killed Billy the Kid. The 'Kid' had been his friend in earlier years. Together they were known as Big Casino and Little Casino, in reference to their respective size. Garrett had even captured Billy during the period of the bloody Lincoln County War, and had spared him. He had locked him up at Lincoln, but the 'Kid' gunned down two guards and shot his way out of jail. Garrett again caught up with him at Fort Sumner in the summer of 1881, and shot him dead. It's extremely rare to catch up with Garrett in a letter (he is more obtainable in documents) let alone in the office of sheriff.
