American private detective.
Autograph letter signed ("Wm A. Redfield"), to Governor Charles H. Hardin of Missouri, Port Allegany, Pennsylvania, December 4, 1875. 1 page, quarto, on stationery of the American Express Company, small chip at upper left, else very fine.
"Please give me the following information. Is there an outstanding reward for the arrest of the James Boys. And if the reward is good whether captured dead or alive & the amount of the reward. Are they by Legislature considered outlaws ..." Hardin was governor and Redfield worked for Pinkerton, the day he raided the James family home. That day they killed Jesse's young step-brother Archie, and wounded his mother.
