SANTA ANNA, Antonio Lopez de (1794-1876).
Letter signed ("A.L. Sta. Anna") to Jose D. M. Matera, Monterey, October 21, 1853, in Spanish. 1 page, quarto, very fine.
Two weeks before William Walker and his band of Californian adventurers capture the Mexican governor of Southern California and declare the Republic of Lower California, President Santa Anna writes about a serious problem which has defied resolution to this day. "My dear Sir Through your letter of the 7th of this month I am informed that you have assumed command of the counter-smuggling activities of that department (Tacubaya) and that of Tamaulipas, where I hope you will duly carry out the functions entrusted to you because of your integrity, while working with maximum zeal in pursuing the contraband."
