Lot Essay

Yun Shouping was a native of Piling, the ancient designation for Changzhou (present-day Wujin) in Jiangsu Province. Yun's original name was Ge and his zi were Shouping and Zhengshu. In addition, he used several hao, such as Nantian, Yunxi Waishi, Dongyuan Caoyi and Baiyun Waishi. Yun Shouping was a poet, calligrapher and painter. He became very well-known for his expertise in flower painting, using very vivid colours. Painting in the Northern Song mogu or "boneless" style, he captured the elegance and continuously changing appearance of flowering plants. Yun Shouping was widely followed by his contemporaries and also by subsequent generations.
