Lu Yanshao was born in Jiading, in Jiangsu Province, and he started studying art at the Wuxi Art College. Later he became a student of the two painters Feng Zhaoran and Wang Tongqian, with whom he studied not only painting but also poetry, literature and calligraphy. Over the years he accumulated a profound knowledge of traditional painting. His works demonstrate his ability to adapt, and yet are not lacking a distinctive personal style. He was particularly fond of Huang Shan, and through his innovative techniques always interpreted her spirit and appearance down to finest detail. Since 1936, Lu Yanshao had several exhibitions of his works in Chongqing, Chengdu, Wuxi, Beijing and Hong Kong. In 1983 he took part in a touring exhibition of paintings in the United States. A year later, his paintings were included in a five- painter exhibition in Germany. Aside from his painting, Lu also taught at the Shanghai Studio of Painting and the Zhejiang College of Art. His works are in several permanent and private collections around the world.
