Lot Essay

This finely drawn battle scene, with its contrasting areas of confusion and calm, is unusually engaging. The intensity of the fighting of the intertwined six horses in the foreground is juxtaposed against the prisoner being quietly led away behind them. The slain hero's now peaceful face stands out against the dismayed expressions of his soldiers and the determination shown on the face of the soldier chasing his enemy at back left. Small details abound; amid the usual graphically depicted wounds is a lone severed hand and the unpleasant spectacle of a dog licking a severed head.
With no text on the verso, it would appear to be an independent drawing, not an illustration to a text.
