Lot Essay

Emmanuel Nobel was a major patron of the firm of Fabergé, often visiting the workshops to view the progress of his commissions. F. Birbaum records in his memoirs the oil baron's generosity 'that at times this was his chief occupation and delight'.

For a bronze commemorative plaque of the Nobel Company, see Geza von Habsburg and Marina Lopato, Fabergé: Imperial Jeweller, (London, 1993), no.183, where it is conjectured that the plaque was produced by A.F. Vasiutinskii (1858-1935), the leading medal maker at the St. Petersburg Mint.
