Lot Essay

Several commodes displaying the same distictive characteristics are recorded, including that stamped by Jean-Mathieu Chevallier (maître in 1743) sold in Bang-en-Bresse, 4 April 1993, as well as that sold in Versailles, 22 November 1992, lot 131. Likewise, the ormolu angle-mounts appear on a commode stamped L.S.F., sold anonymously at Christie's Monaco, 13 June 1988, lot 118, another sold in Paris, Drouot, 2-3 December 1948, lot 200 and another at Sotheby's Monaco, 3 May 1977, lot 58. Identical chutes also feature on a bureau attributed to Noel Gérard (A. Pradère, Les Ebénistes Français de Louis XIV à la Révolution, Paris, 1989, p.111, fig. 67, p. 113, fig.71), as well as on an amaranth bureau sold anonymously in these Rooms, 15 June 1995, lot 49.
