Lot Essay

The foliate-wrapped arabesque branches are reminiscent of the designs of Daniel Marot (d.1752), architect to King William III, as published in his Oeuvres of 1712. A related candelabra with floral embellishments and cut-glass finials from la chambre du Roi at Versailles is illustrated in Bronzes D'Eclairage, T.454. A further related pair was offered by the Marquis de Goulaine, Christie's Monaco, 20 June 1994, lot 271.
