Lot Essay

The distinct sculptural carving of this fauteuil is similar to chairs produced by the celebrated 18th century menuisier Jean-Baptiste I. Tilliard. The central heart-shaped cartouche at the seat-rail is particularly reminiscent of his work. A closely related example is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 834, fig. c.
