This architectural armoire, clearly inspired by the oeuvre of André-Charles Boulle, is extremely closely related to that included in the catalogue of the collection of Monsieur Gaignat (1697-1768), ancien Secrétaire du Roi, & Receveur des Consignations. Drawn up by the menuisier Pierre Rémy in 1768 and published in Paris, this catalogue is of particular historical importance, owing to the existance of the dessinateur Gabriel-Louis de Saint-Aubin's own copy, with illustrations for each lot drawn into the margins. The Gaignat armoire was included in the sale of Gaignat's collection, which took place in Paris in 1769.

A further armoire, almost certainly executed by the same workshop but with lacquer panels fitted to the doors, was sold from the Bensimon Collection, Paris, 18-19 November 1981, lot 144.
