Lot Essay

The Studio was the journal for artistic debate from its launch in 1893 right through to the first world war. Artists wrote reviews on current exhibitions and also articles on contemporary and historic design. The magazine championed good design with competitions to design a specific object, often stipulating which material to be used in construction.
