This fine enamel is taken after George Romney's portrait of 1772. The portrait, which was exhibited at the Society of Artists in that year, is at Knole. Ozias Humphry was a friend of Romney with whom he travelled to Rome in 1773. He was also a friend of Spicer and it was in his lodgings kept by the latter's widow that he died. This friendship may explain the existence of two signed and dated replicas of the present enamel, one illustrated in the exhibition catalogue Le miniature nel tempo, Padova, 1984-1985, cat. no. 4, the other, of 1783, illustrated in R. Bayne-Powell, Catalogue of Portrait Miniatures in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, Cambridge, 1985, p. 206.
