A dignitary called the Portuguese Ambassador to Paris, facing left in black coat, white waistcoat and cravat, wearing the badge of the Royal French Order of the Legion of Honour and the commander cross and breast star of the Royal Portuguese Order of the Christ

Two other versions of this miniature are known, one, in the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Orléans, with the sitter called the French politician Duke Pasquier (1767-1862), inv. no. 7026, and another one, unidentified but signed with Lizinka de Mirbel's pre-1824 maiden name, was in the Eltzbacher Collection, sold Christie's, London, 8 June 1971, lot 74. Madame de Mirbel's correspondence, kept in the Bibliothèque Doucet, Paris, shows that she was very friendly with a Portuguese nobleman, Mr de Saldanha, who may be the sitter of the present miniature.
