Lot Essay

A Cizhou box of similar size and shape, also with reserved decoration on the top of the lid, and dated to the Northern Song dynasty, is in the collection of the Nanjing Museum and illustrated in Zhongguo Meishu Quanji, Arts and Crafts, Ceramics, vol. 2, zhong, Shanghai, 1988, no. 132. A Song dynasty vase from the Jizhou kilns with similarly detailed reserve decoration was excavated in Anhui in 1955, ibid., no. 185. Both reserve decoration and a similar geometric border appear on a Yuan dynasty jar found at Bacun, illustrated by M. Medley, Yüan Porcelain and Stoneware, London, 1974, pl. 96A.
