Lot Essay

Stem cups with this design reflect the Qianlong emperor's interest in Lamaist Buddhism, which flourished during his reign. Not only were there a number of Lamaist temples in Beijing, a copy of the Tibetan Potala Palace was built at Chengde.

Compare a similar stemcup in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, included in the Catalog of the Special Exhibition of K'ang-Hsi, Yung-Cheng and Ch'ien'Lung Porcelain Ware from the Ch'ing Dynasty in the National Palace Museum, Taipei 1986, Pl. 69. Another is in the Groninger Museum, illustrated by C.J.A. Jörg in Oosterse keramiek uit Groninger kollekties, Groningen, 1982, no. 100.

Compare a Qianlong cloisonné enamel stem cup with similar design in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Enamel Ware in the Ming and Ch'ing Dynasties, Taipei, 1999, no. 74.

An identical stemcup was sold in our Hong Kong sale Rooms 25th October, 1993, lot 783.
