A FOUR-TIERED LAC BURGAUTE BOX AND COVER
17th/18th century
The cover decorated with finely cut mother-of-pearl to depict figures and animals among pavilions below the full moon, the sides with panels of birds perched on peony stems against a diaper ground, the inside of the cover with a red lacquer inscription, minor flakes

Lot Essay

The inscription on the inside of the cover may be translated as reading:
As if someone had gathered up two acres of frost from outside the city wall this box full of newly fermented white rice was sent to me writing on the tray that evening on Su mountain in the freezing rain I smelled the fragrance of the North signed: Ni seal: Yu Ni
