The squat globular body divided into seven panels by moulded vertical ribs enclosing mandarin ducks, cranes, a Buddhist lion, lingzhi, and floral sprays, the slender flaring neck with pendent flower heads above stiff leaves, luting line crack stabilised

Lot Essay

A vase of similar form but painted with fish, found in north Bali, is in the Museum Pusat, Jakarta, illustrated in Chinese Ceramics, The World's Great Collections, Tokyo, New York and San Francisco, 1982, vol. 3, fig. 261, also illustrated by M. Rinaldi, Kraak Porcelain, London, 1989, p. 190, pl. 249. Compare also the vase of similar shape but decorated with birds perched on branches, illustrated by Ayers and Krahl in Chinese Ceramics from the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, p. 728, cat. no. 1290. A further example, fitted with a silver mount dated circa 1585, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
